Marriage Is a Covenant, Not a Contract
Marriage was never meant to be a temporary agreement or a conditional contract. As we dive into scripture, we learn that Marriage Is a covenant a promise that we make with our spouse before God. If it were a contract, it would go something like this: one person breaks their end of the deal, the other party is off the hook. But in a covenant, each person is called to be faithful no matter what. This is exactly how God loves us.
In Ephesians 5:25–33, the Apostle Paul paints a beautiful picture of marriage when he says: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her…”
Think about that. Jesus gave everything His time, His strength, His life. Not because we earned it, but because His love was unconditional. And that’s our example. Wives are also called to love and respect their husbands not just when it’s easy or convenient, but as part of this same holy covenant of mutual sacrifice, grace, and honor.
