The Slums
Today we visited the slums. These pictures can in no way reflect what we experienced. Right in the middle was a school. These kids are considered lucky to be able to go (there were many more outside who were not welcomed in). They loved to be touched and have their picture taken.
Change in Plans-Big Blessing (from Melanie)
God’s plans are always better than ours, and that is the best way to sum up my reflections on today. When I woke up I was still upset by the reality that our trip to the leper colony had been cancelled. I had really looked forward to that and wondered what God would have in store. In place of that trip, God allowed me (and our team) the privilege of meeting with professionals from Mercy Hospital and touring the facility. It was a great connection for my work with Medical Ministries International and I’m looking forward to a long-term relationship. The most thrilling part was to reawaken to the reality that the work at MMI is vital and necessary. As I walked through barren hospital rooms, I envisioned all of the supplies and equipment in our warehouses and how great of a blessing they could be to the people serving here, at Mercy Hospital in Kolkata, India. God is so good!
Rono’s Day of Serving
The first thing you do is roll up your pant legs. Not because an unmerciful sun bears down on you in Calcutta in June. It’s because you are soon sloshing in water while working at Premdan, the Mother Teresa center for the elderly, near one of the Calcutta’s endless slums. My shift was Monday.
The Team
I came to Kolkata 2 years ago and had experienced the insane car rides through town, the smells that linger in your nostrils, and the incredible poverty that is at every turn. I know I can never articulate the feelings and emotions that I felt last time nor would I be able to truly do justice this time. The only thing that I could think about was that I was now traveling with 3 others who had never experienced this trip. Would they have the same feelings? Would this trip have the same effect on them that it had on me 2 years ago? Well you can see by their posts that this trip is life changing for all of us. Read the full post »
