Focal Pointe #37
In Unity & Love
(Ephesians 4:1-3 ESV)
“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, [2] with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, [3] eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Friends, we are called to walk in unity and love! In the scripture above, Paul urges the church to walk in unity based on the truths of God. And each one of the qualities mentioned—humility, gentleness, patience, and love—were displayed in the character of Christ and are to be evident in the daily walk of every Christian. There is power in unity!
I am reminded of the unity, or solidarity required of photons in order to create a laser beam. You see, there are billions of photons in a little 40 watt light bulb, and that light bulb can be used to light an entire room. But the same amount of photons that exist inside that 40 watt bulb, when focused, when united, can create a laser beam capable of burning through steel! Imagine what a billion united Christ-followers could accomplish!
(Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV)
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. [2] And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
As believers, we are also supposed to try to imitate God’s holiness in all of our ways. We are to be like Him, not like slaves trying to earn a wage, but like children trying to please our father. And who doesn’t enjoy pleasing their father?
Are you walking in unity and love? Is it obvious to others? I encourage you to read Ephesians 4 and 5 this week. The first passage of scripture I gave you is an exhortation of Paul’s. The second scripture is really two transitional verses. Instruction regarding application directly follows these scriptures. I highly recommend reading the full context and asking yourself the question, “Am I a walking example of unity and love?”
Have a great week!
Shawn
