Christmas Memory

Listening to Pastor Steve’s message last weekend, as he was talking about the imagination of children, I happily flashed back to one of my favorite Christmas memories.

Back when I was still young enough to be totally in awe of Santa Claus my brothers and I awoke one Christmas morning to find our tree completely covered with candy canes. Now I wasn’t a big fan of hard candy when I was little, but I did love to be showered with attention and caring. This is something I think we miss out on as adults. What happens to us while we are growing up that makes us uncomfortable when others are generous to us? Why do we pretend to be “okay” when what we really want is for someone to show us they care? How is it possible that we can say “I know God loves me” and then not look for evidence of His caring out of stubbornness?

I realize not everybody struggles with this all of the time, but I think if we were honest with ourselves each of us would admit there have times in life when we wished we were still a kid so we could be released of the responsibilities of adulthood. Jesus said in order for us to enter God’s Kingdom we must become like children (Matt 18:3). I don’t remember much else about that Christmas morning although I’m sure it was good. What I do remember is standing there looking at the tree and trying to imagine how it all happened. It was simply Joyful.

One of my biggest Christmas memories was the time that I took a present that I had been looking at for days from under the tree, when mom and dad were in the other room and teased the puppy with it until he tore it open for me. Then opppps…. I got to see what it was. My mom and dad were wise to me though and I got into trouble for it. But I thought that was a pretty ingenious idea for a 6 year old to come up with …LOL

Every year we got out the 6′ tall, green aluminum, flocked Christmas tree out of the closet and as a family put it together one limb at a time..LOL When we were done hanging all the ornaments dad would put the star on top that blinked. It was so shinny and pretty and very, very, tall. Awwww the 60′s and the modern Christmas tree. ( :
